A NEW PORTFOLIO OF MY PAINTINGS FROM THE EARLY 2020'S
It’s hard for a mid-century man to talk about the 20’s and not mean the 1920’s. To me, the ‘20s was the birth of surrealism, the lost generation, Hemingway and Fitzgerald, and the flourishing of modernism. In my mind, art mattered to the world in the 1920’s. Recently, I watched a video of Man Ray being interviewed in the 1970s, and he said we were having a horrible time in the 20s, anxious and unsure of the future. “The participants did not write the lore of that time; we thought we were wasting our lives.” Man Ray said. Or something like that. That made me feel better. I am 57 and painting, but I don’t always know what I create makes a difference. I might be as lost as Man Ray, Hemingway, or the other 1920’s artists, but I don’t think so. I make lovely paintings to put on the walls of people’s houses. They are not commercial, and they are not historical. They are singular and sweet. I hope you like these paintings, and if you want me to make one for you, let me know. I am sure it will be worthless in the future, but you will adore it while it hangs in your house.
