EXPLODATION! Deliverable 1

Example: EXPLODATION   an exploded explanation of art history
The evolution of art in Western civilization is an epic journey, a mirror to humanity's past from its ancient roots. Seniors and juniors at High Tech High demonstrate the web that has been spun by artistic giants such as Michelangelo, Bernini, Picasso, Dali, and Blu. Each Explodation is a unique comparison of periods, movements, or artists, where exploded images make clear the method, subject, reason, and influences of the fine arts we hold dear as a human race.  Although each page is distinctive, collectively they uncover countless of connections spanning across cultures and centuries.

Art History Study Deliverable 2

My Exemplar

Each student chose a painting to recreate. They used photoshop to deconstruct the paintings to create their maquettes. The students used their new knowledge of art history to pick their painting and they used photoshop to create a new version of the famous images. They then taught themselves to paint by making a painting. I might have suggested small tweaks, but not bad for new artists.

Art History Notes Deliverable 3

Art History Guide
I lectured! There I admit it. I had fun, some of the students had fun too. Some took notes for the first time in their lives. I was on every morning with my slides and a story. The students took notes and I checked them once a week. We had quizzes on Friday.  I still learned the most because it was my project to put together the slides and the show everyday. It is good to remember that.

The Big Event! Deliverable 4
Write a famous artist into our art history book, and do art in their tradition.

Students found a Modern to Post Modern artist of note. (1850 - today) (Courbet - Present Day) They then emulate their Method, Subject and Reason for creation by making 2  images like the artist. Along with this, the students wrote the art history to explain their artist. The outline for the book will be: Who or What influenced their artist to create. Method, Subject and Reason The make they have left on the world of art.

My Exemplar: David Hockney (b.1937)

Round Two! Deliverable 5
Write yourself in to our art history book.
What makes you an artist?
How are you influenced by what other people create?

Then after the emulation is complete each student made 1 to 2 pieces of work of their own. Of course, they were influenced by any one or anything they studied or saw.  Then they wrote themselves into the Canon of Art using the same criteria that they used for the famous artist.

Syllabus

I am the expert that will help you make good art. Instead of teaching you all the basics like ballance, contrast, value, color theory etc. I will lend you what I know.  Everyone, even me needs another pair of eyes on my work.

Art is never finished, you just stop working on it.

I am not scarry, I am passionate about art, and I can see when you are cutting corners on your work because I do it too. I call you on it because I care, if I did not care I would not say anything.

You need to revise your work, I will have critique due dates and final draft due dates, if you miss critique due dates because you did not do your work you can’t get those grades back. This is how students have “Gamed the System” in the past.

If you don’t have an Explodation, 2-3 works and the write up for the artist you chose and 2-3 works and a write up for your own work you can’t get an “A” in my class. You need to be in the book for an “A”. Last minute work is never good, you need to try.

This is not an art class. This is a collaborative Project Based Learning class where you get art credit. You will learn if you do the project, that is what you will be graded on, not sitting around doing your own thing.

Assignment will be graded on a 4 point scale

A=4
B=3
C=2

D-F=1

If it is a big project there will be multiple grades for the same project
Example:If you get an “A” on  Explodation it will look like  this is Powerschool  A  A  A
If your get a “B” on your artist pages it will look like this in Powerschool  B  B  B  B

Think of me as your parent, I yell, “Dinner” at 6:00pm and you say, “I’m not hungry” and you skip dinner. At 8:30 you say, “I’m hungry, make me something to eat, I am hungry now”. I am not the kind of parent that makes you food at 8:30. I would say make it yourself, this is not a restaurant and you better clean up too.
Replace Dinner for Work
Replace 6:00pm for the Critique due date
Replace 8:30 for the Last Minute
Tardies and Absences have dog my class. We start working in the beginning of class and if you miss the beginning you miss out on a lot.
