Behold HTH Frontiers
Albert Bierstadt

What are frontiers? Where no one has gone before? In School we study old frontiers,
“The West” (where Americas went) “The East” (where Europeans went) “The Southern Hemisphere” (Africa and South America to look for gold) Ironically all of these places were already discovered by the inhabitance. Space; “The Final Frontier” cost a lot to explore. Our society has been backing off. What Frontiers are going to be explored next? Digital? “The Cloud”? Psychological? Will our new frontiers be real or for propaganda? The First Deliverable is a fully researched and sighted opinion paper and graphic work about one of the pieces on display this fall at the San Diego Contemporary Museum of Art’s. In your research you must uncover the frontier that the artist intended to illustrate at the time it was made. You then need to decide in retrospect what the true frontier this art work was showed the world. Here is my example using Albert Bierstadt, Cho-looke, the Yosemite Fall, 1864
My conclusion was that Bierstadt was more interested in being a nature tourist and he documented the isolated beauty of Yosemite much the same way we might have photographed when I was a kid. Now, Google is our portal to virtual tourism, the topographic map, mixed with the satellite view and the black and white image of the falls screen shot of Google Maps is the new tourism, I think Bierstadt would have hated this, but he is dead. |
A Showcase will consist of a gallery performances at MCASD La Jolla by the students (readings in front of art works, etc.) and might also include a book form.
Every student will need a "Presentation Card" that has: Who they are, What art work they are analyzing, line drawing of the work (we can't use their images) and on the back what they think the real frontier is all about.
The “Showcase” will tack place on Thursday, October 18, 2012 from 5- 7 PM. If you are not prepared, finished work by October 16th (that means edited and approved) you will not participate in the show case.
I am sick of students wanting to exhibit unfinished work! Last minute work is not ok because the editing process is abbreviated, and that process is where the great work comes from. I will end my job over this! no amount a sad stories, angry parents, large sacks of cash and teams of lawyers will convince me that your work is good enough if we haven’t gone through the process of revising and critique.
Final Assignment
You are an Artist, (at least while you are in my class) and your assignment is to illustrate a frontier somewhere around the school. The concept of frontiers is debatable; a frontier to one person is home to another. There are Ideological and sociological frontiers, your assignment is to visually define a frontier at school.
Some examples of frontiers around school are:
In the boys room, the sarcastic dedications above each urinals in the bathroom, is a frontier, no other high school in America has gone there. Another could be the cigarette vending machine that sells students art, even though it has been done before just not in a school. We want you to go to a new place, and get other people there with you, that is the propaganda aspect of frontier art.
